What Changed With R-410A?
Federal HVAC refrigerant rules now limit the global warming potential of refrigerants used in new residential and light-commercial air-conditioning and heat-pump systems. As of January 1, 2026, a newly installed residential split system must use a refrigerant with a global warming potential below 700.
That is why newer equipment is using lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-454B or R-32 instead of R-410A. This change applies to new systems. It does not make an existing R-410A system illegal.
Can an Existing R-410A System Still Be Repaired?
Yes. Existing R-410A systems can continue to be serviced. The EPA allows manufacturers to continue producing R-410A components for servicing existing equipment, and those service components can include major parts such as condensing units, compressors, and evaporator components.
That does not mean every part will always be easy to locate. Availability can vary by brand, model, age, and distributor inventory. When a major component fails, it makes sense to compare the cost and practicality of the repair with the age and overall condition of the system.
Repairing One Component vs. Replacing the Whole System
Repairing an existing system
An existing R-410A system may still be repaired with compatible R-410A service components when appropriate parts are available.
Replacing both the condenser and indoor coil
For residential split systems, replacing both together is considered a new system. After January 1, 2026, that new system must use a lower-GWP refrigerant.
Keeping the existing line set
Leaving the refrigerant lines in place does not change the rule if the condensing unit and indoor coil are both replaced.

Do Not Mix Refrigerants
