When Your AC Stops in San Antonio Heat
A complete cooling failure during a hot San Antonio day can quickly become more than an inconvenience. The right first steps are to rule out simple issues, protect people and pets from heat exposure, and avoid turning a repairable HVAC problem into an electrical or water-damage problem.
First Decide Whether There Is an Immediate Safety Hazard
Turn the HVAC equipment off if you see smoke or sparks, smell a strong burning odor, hear electrical arcing, find water near energized components, or see heavy ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor equipment. Do not open electrical panels or keep resetting a breaker that trips. If you smell gas near a furnace or other fuel-burning appliance, leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.
For a medical emergency or signs of heat illness, contact emergency services. HVAC service is not a substitute for medical help.
Safe Checks to Make Before You Call
- Thermostat: Confirm it is set to cooling, the fan is set appropriately, and the set temperature is below the room temperature. Replace thermostat batteries if needed.
- Power: Check the HVAC breakers and the indoor-unit service switch. Reset a tripped breaker only once. If it trips again, leave it off.
- Filter and vents: Check for a severely clogged filter and make sure the main return and supply registers are not blocked.
- Drain safety: A clogged condensate line can trip a safety switch and stop cooling. Do not bypass the switch; water needs a safe path out of the equipment.
- Outdoor unit: From a safe distance, note whether it is running and whether leaves or debris block airflow. Do not remove the cabinet.
If cooling does not return after these checks, the system needs diagnosis. Running equipment that is frozen, repeatedly tripping, or making severe mechanical noise can cause additional damage.
Protect the Household While You Wait
- Close blinds or shades on sun-facing windows and limit heat-producing activities.
- Use fans only in occupied rooms; fans improve comfort but do not lower room temperature.
- Move children, older adults, pets, and anyone sensitive to heat to a safely cooled location if indoor conditions are becoming unsafe.
- Keep doors and windows closed if the outdoor air is hotter and more humid than the indoor air.
- If water is leaking, protect nearby belongings and turn the system off when water could reach electrical components.
What to Tell the HVAC Company
When you call, share the indoor temperature, when the problem began, whether the indoor blower and outdoor unit run, any breaker trips, water or ice you can see, unusual sounds or odors, and the equipment location. Photos of the thermostat, visible ice, water, or the equipment data plate can help the dispatcher understand the situation, although the cause still requires an on-site diagnosis.
