Pro tip: Write the date on the filter with a marker when you install it so you always know when it was last changed.
2. Keep Your Outdoor Unit Clean
Your condenser unit needs good airflow to work properly. Keep at least 2 feet of clearance around it. Remove leaves, grass clippings, and debris regularly. You can gently spray it with a garden hose (never a pressure washer) to clean the fins.
3. Check Your Thermostat Settings
Choose thermostat settings that balance comfort, household needs, and energy use. If you have a programmable thermostat, use the scheduling feature. Results vary based on equipment condition, home construction, settings, usage, weather, and energy rates.
4. Clear Your Drain Line
The condensate drain line can clog with algae and mold, causing water damage and system shutdowns. Pour a cup of white vinegar down the drain line every 3 months to keep it clear. The drain line is usually a PVC pipe near your indoor unit.
5. Seal Air Leaks Around Your Home
Check for air leaks around windows and doors. Appropriate caulk or weatherstripping may help reduce unwanted air leakage. Have suspected duct leaks evaluated by an HVAC professional.
