Check the air filter
Start with airflow. Check the filter and replace it when needed based on the filter manufacturer's guidance and your system's needs.
Test the thermostat in heat mode
Before the first cold night, switch the thermostat to heat and raise the set temperature a few degrees. Confirm that the system starts and that warm air reaches the home.
Open and clear supply and return vents
Move furniture, rugs, boxes, or other items that block vents and returns so the system can move air properly.
Clear around the outdoor unit
If you have a heat pump, remove leaves, grass, and debris around the outdoor unit and keep the manufacturer's required clearance around it.
Check carbon monoxide alarms
Homes with fuel-burning equipment should have working carbon monoxide alarms in appropriate locations. Test them and replace batteries or units according to the manufacturer's instructions.

A professional fall tune-up goes beyond the items a homeowner can safely check. Depending on your equipment, a technician can verify heating operation, inspect electrical components and safety controls, evaluate blower operation and airflow, check thermostat performance, and look for developing problems before heating season.
For heat pumps, that can include checking the heating cycle and auxiliary heat operation. For gas furnaces, qualified service should include appropriate inspection of the furnace's safety, combustion, and venting components according to the equipment and applicable requirements.
Do Not Ignore These Warning Signs
Schedule service if the system will not heat, repeatedly turns on and off, makes new or unusual noises, or produces a persistent burning odor. If you smell gas, leave the area and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location.
